Both I and Amanda live in a BHA project for the elderly and disabled that has — outrageously. with complete indifference to human life (we are after all expendable here in their eyes) — banned window air conditioning (and tripled ac fees) this summer. The building is an old concrete high rise with substandard ventilation and west facing windows, and summertime heat easily gets into the triple digits. What’s more there’s no where for us to get cool even if we had enough self awareness to know we needed to cool off (the elderly, those on pain meds, etc often lack that awareness). Amanda is especially at risk given her illnesses, but I too might die this summer. So might virtually every one of my 150 neighbors.

That was what I was supposed to be working on, when Amanda got seriously Ill last fall. I had to put it aside to help her, which has made her feel guilty (that she would be the cause of her neighbors dying, though that blame would always rest on the shoulders of the Burlington Housing Authority). As for me, I’m really worried that we’ll lose Amanda to the heat (she is in the highest risk group for heat injury and had problems last summer even with adequate air conditioning).
It really is important. Decker Towers is not a small building, and virtually everyone here is vulnerable.

when we were kids the only thing that got us through most days was music. its why we started fall out boy in the first place. . this isn’t a reunion because we never broke up. we needed to plug back in and make some music that matters to us.
